Taking nature by the STEM
Nature Exploration for Students through Teamwork (N.E.S.T.) is a spring event for 7th graders in our Project Reach program. It is held at the YMCA Camp of Maine in Winthrop.
The overnight experience allows students to improve their communication, team building, problem-solving and leadership skills through activities that take them out of the traditional classroom and into nature's classroom, such as navigating elements on the camp's low ropes course.
Students are also introduced to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.) through fun, interactive workshops and activities like stargazing, a nighttime nature walk, building and testing a lunar buggy, and designing and constructing a container that will protect an egg when dropped from a ladder.
