Project Reach and JMG Students

Project Reach is a project-oriented and adventure-based program designed to address the challenges of middle school. Project Reach was created in 1995 to inspire middle school students to reach their academic and personal potential. Project Reach is unique because it is the only program targeted to this age group that then addresses issues as students transition to high school.

The goals of Project Reach are…

  1. Students will stay in school.
  2. Students will improve in their grades, behavior and self-esteem.
  3. Students will transition into high school with JMG services.

Want it, need it, benefit from it!

Project Reach was created and developed here in Maine and is now being adopted nationwide by other states who are interested in this type of program for their middle school students.

In addition to the curriculum (see below), Project Reach Specialists provide individual guidance and academic assistance to each Project Reach student. The Project Reach Specialists maintain contact with all 9th grade Project Reach students to ensure that the students are still engaged and connected to school.

In an effort to develop leadership, communication, problem solving and teamwork skills, Project Reach engages in adventure-based education practices. (link to adventure-based initiatives)

Project Reach Council

Project Reach Council is the student-led governing body within the Project Reach program. The Council allows for an affiliation for Project Reach students, and increases their leadership skills as well as their involvement in the community. Students are elected to leadership positions and meetings are held once per month at a minimum.

Curriculum Components

7th Grade: Self-Understanding, Communication, Organizational/Study Skills, Decision Making, Character Development

8th Grade: Dreamwork, Lifestyles, Negotiations, Career-Based Learning, High School Transition

Project Reach believes that in order to increase the potential for success in high school, we must first prepare 8th grade students for the transition into high school. The High School Transition Unit includes:

  • Visits to High School
  • Shadowing Days at the High School
  • Guest Speakers from the High School
  • Overview of High School Resources
